The earliest Methodist conferences were called by invitation of John Wesley, beginning with 1744; the record of the proceedings of these conferences was made in writing by different members until 1749 when the first printed minutes appeared; the publication of yearly minutes was not begun, however, until 1765. The Conference was constituted as an incorporated body in 1784. The term Wesleyan Methodist gradually came into use after Wesley's death in 1791, and the English branch of Methodism is known as the Wesleyan Methodist Church
